About Us
ABOUT MARTHA’S LOVE
The driving force behind Martha’s Love can be summarized in one sentence “A Better Tomorrow Starts with Love”. There is no better illustration of Love than the depiction in Romans 5:8, “but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us”. Love is not earned or desired, it is given. That is why Martha’s Love exists, to extend a helping hand to the less fortunate and the least desiring.
Martha’s Love firmly holds to the Biblical principles of God’s love for all humankind. However, it is not a part or associated with any church or denomination. Who the organization helps is strictly on a need basis and not on religion. We are also open to receiving legal donations from anyone and organizations that have the passion to help change people’s lives for the better.
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
Martha’s Love is a nonprofit organization whose primary objective is to provide educational opportunities to less fortunate communities in West Africa either by building schools, helping existing schools, or giving scholarships to those who cannot afford them. Our secondary objective is to provide healthcare needs, orphan care, and other basic needs like food and clothing.
FOUNDER'S PASSION
The passion of Joel in making sure that Martha’s Love succeeds is demonstrated in the steps and decisions that he has made up to date. Out of his midget resource (his monthly allowance), he was able to undergo all the legal procedures to have Martha’s Love registered. Furthermore, his first travel outside of the United States was to take a feasibility study trip to a remote village (Garphi Village) in Nimba County, Liberia, West Africa. Finally, Joel never stopped to seek support through making contacts with individuals, organization, and different entities to promote the mission of Martha’s Love.
OUR HISTORY
The organization, Martha’s Love was established and registered as a legal entity in California, USA, on December 16, 2023, by Joel Michael Thomas, the founder and CEO. Later in February 2024, it obtained its 501(c)(3) status from the IRS, meaning that “Donors can deduct contributions they make to the organization under IRC Section 170”. The motivation to start Martha’s Love was inspired by the personal struggle that Joel was undergoing at a point in his life. Please take time and read through his narrative.
“From what I can remember, I believe the seed idea of Martha’s Love was planted in my imagination when I was a kid: from stories my parents had told my sister and me about experiences they had gone through in Africa, coupled with documentaries I have watched on poverty-stricken places in Africa. My parents told us numerous stories about the challenges and struggles that they had to endure when their country was plunged into years of civil war beginning in December 1989 and when they fled to neighboring countries to seek refuge for their lives. They had no source of income to depend on for their livelihood. They went through life by providence and the Grace of God. From what I could deduce, they appeared to be happy and content with the little that they were given by random people from their local churches. Their story to me was nothing, but resilience and fortitude amid adversity and the state of abject poverty.
In my little mind, I wondered, how things would have been if my parents had had my sister and me in such a situation, how things would have turned out for us. However, these thoughts began to fizzle away when I became occupied with football: from playing flag football with Little League to playing high school football. Things dramatically changed during my first semester in college. My whole world appeared to have turned upside down. It was like I had been ripped away from my family and my life of comfort. It fled to me like I was a refugee in a strange country. The thought that was going through my mind, triggered a surge of memories of the situations that my parents experienced. Now to a lesser degree, I could resonate with what they felt. At that point, the thought of Martha’s Love was born.
I had a feeling that I could not express, I felt burdened to do something bigger than my happiness. Then this profound thought seriously dawned on me ‘I could be used as a conduit to extend a helping hand to people who are destitute and less fortunate in society to give them the opportunity for a better life’. Right away, the name Martha’s Love came to mind. And there was no better place to initiate this venture than my parents’ homeland, Liberia, West Africa.”
